VINYL DECKING & RAILING

Brock Decking

Brock Decking:
Brock Decking was one of the first all vinyl decking on the market.  Constructed of 100% vinyl, it comes in two designs.  The original cross pattern (tire tread) design, mainly used in Brock Dock construction, comes in three colors, white, light gray and light tan.  The new Brock Deck LE design gives a much more appealing look for deck usage and comes in light gray, light tan and clay.  The aluminum clip strip installation allows Brock decking to expand and contract with the weather and gives the deck (or dock) a surface with no screws on nails showing.

Advantages:  The surface construction of Brock gives the gripping power when wet you will not find in most deck products on the market.  It is also very cool even in the heat of the summer sun.  This makes it ideal for applications where the sun consistently hits the deck.  The decking is very low maintenance and very durable.  Many of the original Brock Docks constructed with wood stringers 15-20 years old have been reconstructed using aluminum stringers and reusing the existing decking.  Available in lengths of 12, 16, 20 and 24 feet eliminates a lot of seams in larger decks.

Disadvantages:  Appearance is not as “Wood” looking as some of the newer decking products.  The clip strip system limits the ability of most DIY people from creating any pattern other than the straight board look.  Edges need to be covered with vinyl trim (available wherever Brock decking is sold) to give it the finishing touch.

Deckle

Deckle:
The Deckle decking is also constructed of 100% vinyl.  Available in three colors: light gray, light tan and clay.   The pattern looks more like a wood plank.  Its tongue and groove construction allows the decking to be installed without the screws showing.

Advantages:  The tongue and groove construction prevents bugs and other pests from coming up from under the deck.  Easy to install and the construction will allow for this product to be installed in a herringbone pattern without giving up on the strength of the deck.  The decking is very low maintenance and very durable.  Not as skid resistant as the Brock but very high to most of the products on the market.  Cool in the hot sun.  Deckle is available in the same lengths as the Brock.

Disadvantages:  The tongue and groove construction can trap water on the surface of the deck if the framing construction is not done properly.  Sub-structure should have a slight slope to the deck to allow the water to drain more quickly.  Like the Brock decking, edges need to be covered with vinyl trim to get that finished look.

Novation

Novation:
The newest member to Royal Outdoor Products, Novation is a solid board alternative decking similar in nature to the popular “composite” decking.  Made of cellular vinyl, the Novation decking looks more like wood but with many of the vinyl decking advantages.  It installs like wood decking and its solid construction eliminates the need to trim it out like the Brock and Deckle products but wide fascia boards made of the same material and color as the decking gives you the option.  The main portion f the board is encapsulated in a harder product giving it a very durable surface.  Available in four colors:  Graystone, Kanyon, Sage and Pebblestone Clay.

Advantages:  Looks more like wood than Brock or Deckle.  Installs like wood but it will not split when trying to screw down the board at the edge.  The decking is very low maintenance and very durable.  Its encapsulated design gives it a superior stain and fade resistance and prevents moisture build up and spills from absorbing into the decking compared to wood and traditional composite decking.  Novation is available in lengths of 16 and 20 feet.

Disadvantages:  Like all solid decking, it is more susceptible to absorption of heat from the sun.  The darker the color, the higher the heat gain.  This is true of all solid products.  You will need to watch the sub-structure construction if you plan on running the decking at an angle as it does not have the same strength as the Deckle.
